St. Stephen holds a tradition of formal, liturgical worship that is unique among Presbyterian churches in the area. Two worship services are held each Sunday and the Lord’s Supper is celebrated each week at the 8:30 a.m. service. A service of morning prayer is held in the chapel on Thursday.
In addition, at various times during the year, we offer services of choral evensong, evening prayer, services of compline, ecumenical services, and services for wholeness.
The early service, held in the west transept without choir, is liturgically ordered, but offers a quieter, simpler format. Communion by intinction is offered at each service. This service is held in the West Transept of the Sanctuary at 8:30 a.m. A nursery is provided.
Held in the main sanctuary, the 11 a.m. service has its roots deep within the Nave of the Reformed tradition and includes a procession with choir, along with hymns, service music, and anthems. The Lord’s Supper is celebrated about 11 times a year and during major Christian festivals. A nursery is provided.
Beginning at 7:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Trinity (located on the north end of the Education building adjacent to the church office), this 20-minute service is followed by a breakfast in the Parish Hall provided by different people each week. You can be at work or into another activity by 8:00 a.m.
Special worship services important to the life of St. Stephen include Advent Lessons and Carols, Christmas Eve services, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week services including Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, Vigil, Easter Lessons and Carols, Independence Sunday, Taizé, Compline, All Saints’ Service of Recognition, Services of Wholeness, and the Kirkin’ O’ the Tartan.
